So you’ve decided to get a set of wheels dedicated for winter use with your winter tires, now what?

What types of wheels are available? What wheel will perform best? What wheel is going to suit your needs? There are two types of wheels readily available for consumer application; wheels made from steel and wheels made from aluminum.

STEEL WHEELS

Steel wheels are the best economical solution due to mass production and the low cost of steel. However, they come in very basic designs that can be boring and require plastic hub covers to get the “aluminum wheel” look. Unfortunately, they are not made for every vehicle application and after a couple years they may rust. Steel wheels require little to no maintenance.

ALUMINUM WHEELS

Visit us and see the endless amount of styles and colours with fitments for every vehicle and range greatly in price. Certain finishes like fully painted silver or black wheels are better than other finishes for winter applications. Steer clear from using chrome finished wheels or wheels with machined lips in the winter months. Chrome has a delicate finish and may fail in winter conditions; it is also not warrantied if used in the winter. Machined lips are a good place for road salt and brake dust to collect in during the winter causing the clear coat to peel and will require maintenance to ensure the finish lasts.
During winter use, both steel and aluminum are susceptible to the harsh Canadian winter conditions.
Aluminum wheels are slowly becoming less and less expensive as manufacturing improves, so the one major reason that would steer you in the direction of a steel wheel is slowly losing traction.
